About the Course

This course is designed for people who have little to no experience with a handgun and will provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling of a semi auto pistol or revolver. Students will start off on our range simulator for a short handgun acclimation period and then transition to the live fire range to learn a proper foundation in the fundamentals. This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills, and ability to safely handle a firearm, and there is no prerequisite requirement for this course. Those who don’t own a handgun yet are also welcome. Rentals for the course are available in store.

  • Basic Firearms Safety Rules

  • Handgun Nomenclature

  • Types of Ammunition

  • Shooting Fundamentals

  • Loading/Unloading

  • Malfunction Clearing

  • Legal Concerns


Required Equipment:

  • Eye and Hearing Protection (Clear Lenses & Electronic Hearing Preferred)

  • Quality Semi-Auto pistol with minimum of two magazines

  • Baseball Cap

  • Water and a snack

  • Notetaking supplies

  • Minimum of 150 rounds of ammunition

  • Factory loaded ammunition ONLY. No Reloads.

  • Appropriate attire – No open toed shoes or flip flops, no tank tops or low-cut tops, no shorts or skirts

  • Speed loader

  • Extra Ammunition

Scott Criswell

Scott Criswell

Scott is currently an active-duty police sergeant and oversees firearms training for his department. Scott began his law enforcement career in 2000 and has held assignments in Patrol, Street Gang Suppression, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, Community Oriented Policing, Street Level Drug & Gang Detective (including plain clothes operations), 11-year SWAT Team member (Entry and Sniper/Observer with two agencies), Firearms instructor (Both Academy and Department), and Field Training Officer.

Scott holds instructor certifications in both private sector and CA POST courses in handgun, carbine, shotgun, long rifle, red dot handgun (RDS), and low light firearms employment. He has also certified in many other operator level firearm and tactical courses presented by private sector companies as well as law enforcement presenters including but not limited to: Vehicle Close Quarters Battle (VCQB), Low Light Operator, Tactical Carbine, and Tactical Handgun.
